What is performance counseling?

You may be wondering what 'performance counseling' is. Performance counseling isn't nearly as common as trauma therapists or CBT therapists, so a lot of people don't know what it is an if it can help them. If you're wondering what performance counseling is and how it can help you, keep reading below:

What is performance counseling?

Performance counseling is mental health counseling that focuses on helping people who know what they want out of life, but feel lost when it comes to getting there. High achievers, such as doctors, lawyers, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and athletes may seem like they have it all together, but many struggle with anxiety, depression, and with letting go of past trauma. Or they may be high-achieving in one area, such as their career, and feel like they are completely broken in another area of life, such as relationships or their physical health. Maybe they struggle with perfectionism and can’t stop beating themselves up whenever they make a mistake. Or they struggle with performance anxiety that stops them from achieving anything at all. Performance counseling is designed to meet the needs of people who strive to be the best and need a little bit of guidance and support to find their purpose, manage frustration, and learn to relax and enjoy their lives.

Is performance counseling only for doctors and athletes?

Not at all. If you're someone who has a dream and doesn't know how to reach it, performance counseling is for you. At True Grit, I don't turn people away because their job isn't cool enough or their goals are too small. Performance counseling isn't about the goal itself. It's about the fact that you have a goal and need guidance on how to reach it.

What if I struggle with more than just wanting to reach a goal?

At True Grit, I work with people who have complex trauma, depression, suicidal thoughts, and intense anxiety. Even if you're struggling with difficult things, I have the training and experience to help you learn to manage your emotions, quiet destructive thoughts, and discover your purpose.

How does performance counseling work?

Each performance counselor is different. At True Grit, I take the time to get to know you - both what bothers you and who you truly are. If you have a goal in mind, we will create a plan for you to reach that goal. We will also work on discovering your core values and purpose, and learning skills to handle stress, increase your confidence, and help you learn to put negative thoughts at bay. My primary modalities are Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. These are all designed to work with your neurobiology to help you learn to manage your anxiety, figure out what stops you, and develop new mental habits that will enhance your mental health.
